BENGALURU: The deadline for house-to-house verification under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Karnataka has been extended for the second time, with the exercise now set to continue until August 17 instead of August 8.
The deadline was earlier extended from July 29 to August 8 after Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) sought additional time to track electors and distribute, collect and digitise verification forms.
The latest extension has been attributed to the high number of electors listed under Absent, Shifted, Dead, Duplicate and Others (ASDDO) categories. The numbers are particularly high in the four districts under the GBA — BBMP Central, BBMP North, BBMP South and BBMP Urban — requiring detailed verification.
Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer V Anbukkumar said the large ASDDO list required a thorough verification process. He noted that similar exercises had been carried out in Mumbai and Delhi and said there was nothing wrong in seeking additional time.
Election officials said citizens, political parties and BLOs had requested more time, as the earlier deadline did not provide sufficient time for verification. The extension will allow citizens to verify the ASDDO list in greater detail, they said.
Under the revised schedule, the draft electoral roll will be published on August 24. Claims and objections can be filed from August 24 to September 23, while the final electoral roll will be published on October 27.
As of August 7, Karnataka had 1,09,83,901 electors under the ASDDO category, accounting for 19.81% of the total electorate. The figure was 1,10,40,534, or 19.81%, on August 6.
The four Bengaluru districts accounted for 48,39,933 ASDDO electors. BBMP Urban had 17,74,626 (44.13%), BBMP North 10,83,747 (46.64%), BBMP Central 8,93,731 (47.29%) and BBMP South 10,87,829 (50.72%).
