The trailer of Batwara 1947, backed by Aamir Khan Productions, has been unveiled, offering a powerful glimpse into a story set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film features Sunny Deol, Shabana Azmi and Preity Zinta in lead roles.
Set during one of the most turbulent chapters in the Indian subcontinent’s history, Batwara 1947 follows a family whose lives are shattered by violence, displacement and the upheaval of Partition. The trailer focuses on the human cost of the tragedy while exploring themes of compassion, resilience and hope amid widespread conflict.
The trailer opens with Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta portraying a married couple celebrating India’s Independence. Their joy is short-lived as the announcement of Partition forces them to leave their home and migrate to the newly created Pakistan. Surrounded by violence and uncertainty, Sunny’s character fights relentlessly to protect his family.
After crossing the border, the family is allotted a haveli that is still occupied by Shabana Azmi’s character, an elderly Hindu woman who refuses to leave her ancestral home. As communal tensions intensify, Sunny’s character stands by her side, refusing to give in to religious hatred. One of the trailer’s most striking moments features him saying, “Mandir todna Islam nahi hai (Destroying a temple is not Islam),” followed by another emotional dialogue: “Har bachche ka pehla mazhab maa hota hai. Maa ko Hindu Musalman mein na batiye. Maa apne aap mein ek mazhab hai (Every child’s first religion is their mother. Don’t divide a mother into Hindu or Muslim. A mother is a religion in herself).”
The trailer also introduces Karan Deol as Sunny Deol’s on-screen son, who warns their enemies that his father will stop at nothing to safeguard his family.
Overall, the trailer portrays the heartbreak and chaos of Partition, depicting families forced to abandon their homes as violence and fear engulf communities. It explores issues of identity, religion and survival while delivering a strong message of humanity. Through its emotional storytelling, the film highlights both the horrors of Partition and the enduring power of compassion in times of hatred.
Apart from the lead cast, the film also stars Karan Deol, Ali Fazal and Abhimanyu Singh in key roles.
Batwara 1947 also marks the reunion of director Rajkumar Santoshi and Sunny Deol nearly three decades after their previous collaboration. The film’s music has been composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics written by Javed Akhtar.
Produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit under the Aamir Khan Productions banner, Batwara 1947 is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on August 14, coinciding with Partition Day.
